Most supplement companies don’t try to squeeze the vitamin C from oranges, and put it in tablets, or grind up kale and put it in capsules. Some vitamins are derived from whole foods, but the majority aren't, they're synthetic. Not that synthetic is at all bad, specially since a lot of medications are made from synthetic materials, but they affect your body differently. Synthetic nutrients aren't easily recognized or absorbed by the body. If you're relying on supplements, you might not be getting the milligrams you think. The manufacturing of supplements can also involve practices that are hard to swallow, such as the use of coal tar and petroleum in the nutrient isolation process. Every nutritional component is there for a reason and it works synergistically to support optimal metabolic function.
Our bodies are biologically equipped to absorb nutrition directly from its source. Nature knows best, and when you get that nutrition from a whole food, it comes naturally as a whole package. For example when you get calcium from a whole food, you get other phytonutrients along with the aid of absorption and help to direct them to your cells. Another great example are vitamins A, E, D and K, these vitamins are best absorbed with fat, so it makes perfect sense that they are naturally found in fat dense foods like sunflower seeds (Vitamin E), avocados (Vitamin E and K), and egg yolks (Vitamins A,D and E).
When eating whole foods, you will be more energetic, and it will be more difficult to overeat. The fiber, water and nutrients they contain will be more filling. By all means, skip the lab created supplements and eat of the earth. Pick fruits, berries, nuts, as well as well as meats and fish.
